Women’s prisons in Ohio are an integrated system

The state of Ohio houses nearly 5,000 women in prison. While the state’s male prison population has nearly tripled since 1978, the female prison population has increased nearly ninefold. The influx of female prisoners began with the war on drugs and has continued through the opioid epidemic. As a result, Ohio has one of the highest per-capita prison populations in the country, and the number of women in prison is more than double the number of men. Officials in the state are now looking at alternative sentencing methods to stem the influx of female inmates.

In Ohio, women’s prisons provide integrated healthcare services. The state’s Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) oversees the health care system within the prisons. The OCR has three divisions. The medical care division focuses on delivering medical care to women in state-run prisons.

Inmate populations at women’s prisons in Ohio are aged 19 to 45 years. The majority of women in prison have been incarcerated for two to fifteen years. Many of these women have received physical abuse from the person they have abused. In addition, many of these women have HIV. Oftentimes, women are incarcerated for crimes involving sexual or physical assault.

The OSRW operates the state’s only in-prison nursery. The Achieving Baby Care Success program gives pregnant inmates custody of their infants while they receive treatment. The program also provides medical care for pregnant inmates and their infants. It also includes an in-house mental health centre.

Women in prisons in Ohio are primarily African-American

The majority of women in prison in Ohio are African-American. The rate of incarceration for African-American women is almost four times higher than for white women, but the disparity is not necessarily due to crime statistics. In fact, government data indicates that the highest number of drug-related arrests and prison admissions are among Caucasian youth.

Inmate statistics show that over half of the women incarcerated in Ohio prisons are African-American, while the rest are Euro-American. Most of them enter the system when they are under the age of twenty-five. While this demographic is not particularly surprising, it should not be dismissed out of hand.

In this study, women incarcerated in three women’s prisons in Ohio were interviewed. Across all three prisons, differences and similarities were noted. All three prisons had a shortage of resources, and they had varying levels of privatization. Some prisons included private medical companies in decision-making and rendering services, while others kept privatization to a minimal level.
