The burning of wax paper releases a huge cloud of smoke that can fill a kitchen. The paper itself is not toxic, but the smoke is enough to cause eye-watering and difficulty breathing for those with breathing issues. Besides, most recipes call for a higher temperature than the melting point of the wax. Soybean and Beeswax are good choices. Parchment paper can also be toxic. If you’re still unsure, read on to find out more about these two materials.

Soybean Wax

Soybean wax paper is made from 100 per cent soybeans and is a sustainable organic alternative to traditional paraffin wax. There is no mineral oil or paraffin in soybean wax, and no need to add additional additives during the production process. The paper can be recycled in a paper recycling bin. Another environmentally friendly alternative is vegetable oil wax paper, which uses pure vegetable oil as its wax. Both types are considered safe for human consumption.

While paraffin wax paper is safe for use as a food preservative, not all types are. Even though paraffin wax has long been used in cooking, it is not completely food-safe. As it melts, paraffin wax releases toxic chemicals. Therefore, soybean wax paper is a better alternative. But you must be careful, as some manufacturers add additional ingredients to this alternative. It is best to purchase pure soybean wax.

Soybean wax paper is not considered toxic, but it does cause health problems in some people. You should consult your doctor if you have concerns about its safety when cooking and burning. However, it is not toxic if you eat it in small quantities. You should avoid ingesting large quantities of this product, as it can cause serious internal damage. Soybean wax paper is safe for composting and can be a great addition to your compost pile.

Bees Wax

If you’re worried that plastic wrap is toxic, try using beeswax paper instead. It’s a natural product made from beeswax, which is extracted from tree resin and plant oils. Beeswax is both reusable and compostable, which means it is safe for you and the environment. It’s also far prettier than cling film. But what if it does have a downside?

To make paper out of beeswax, the beeswax is formed in worker bees’ bodies from eight wax-producing mirror glands in the sternites (ventral shields of the body segments). The wax glands are sized according to the worker’s age and location. The wax glands slowly atrophy as the bees perform daily flights. Beeswax is used in phonograph cylinders, academic parchments, and postgraduate degrees.

Beeswax contains propolis, a natural protective substance that protects the beeswax from spoilage. Bees make propolis by mixing tree resin, pollen, and wax flakes. It serves as an antiseptic barrier and is also used to repair hives. Its name derives from the Greek word for “defence of the city.” Ancient tombs have been discovered to contain untouched beeswax. However, if you don’t plan to use it for cooking or baking, be sure to stick with plastic bags.

Parchment Paper

Compared to wax paper, parchment paper is less toxic. It is fully biodegradable, unlike wax paper, which cannot be composted or recycled. Additionally, the wax paper has traces of chlorine that may be toxic to the environment. Parchment paper is more environmentally friendly because it is unbleached and has an FDA-approved silicone coating. You can purchase parchment paper in pre-cut pieces or cut them yourself.

While the wax paper is made from petroleum-based compounds, parchment paper is made from cellulose. When heated, parchment paper becomes non-stick and pliable. Unlike wax paper, parchment paper is water and heat-resistant. You can purchase it at any grocery store or in the baking aisle. Precut parchment paper sheets are also available for easy slicing and baking. For more eco-friendly baking, you can also consider using reusable parchment paper sheets.

The best part is that parchment paper is not as toxic as wax paper. Paper bags have no non-stick qualities, so any grease you pour on them will absorb it. Additionally, paper bags often contain ink that can be toxic if combined with food. Therefore, paper grocery bags are not a good substitute for parchment paper. If you use paper grocery bags to make bread and cookies, make sure you purchase parchment paper that is not bleached.
