In order to recuperate from an ulcer, Gibbs relocated to Los Angeles in 1963, where he started working as a reservation agent for United Airlines. Before getting her first acting role in the blaxploitation movies Sweet Jesus, Preacher Man, and Black Belt Jones in the early 1970s, she initially appeared in the local black theatre in Los Angeles. On the CBS comedy series Jeffersons, she was hired as Florence Johnston, the family maid, in 1975. Gibbs continued to work as a United Airlines reservation agent for the first two years of her acting career on CBS. She worked in the CBS television studio throughout the day before going to United Airlines to work the night shift. She was invited to resign her position at United Airlines by CBS when the show became a resounding hit.
